[edit] How to install my Fonera
[edit] Default installation procedures
[edit] Step 1 - How to connect the device
- The Fonera should first be connected to the network and then be powered on
- The Fonera will ask for an internet ip adress on this network. If you have no "dhcp" server running then you should perform #2
[edit] Step 2 - define a static ip if necessary
- The Fonera can be connected directly to your computer. Give your pc the ip "169.254.255.2" if it uses no DHCP. In the latter case it will soon change to 169.254.255.x and mention "limited network connectivity".
- Surf with your browser to 169.254.255.1 (make sure you don't use any proxy settings)
- You can now find under "advanced" -> "internet settings" the possibility to change DHCP into STATIC IP
[edit] Step 3 - define a fixed wifi channel if necessary
- The Fonera+ v1.1r1 upto 1.1r2 works best if you set it on a static wifi channel (1 or 11)
- With the freeware program "netstumbler" you could create easily a list of wifi devices in the vincinity and on which wifi channel they are located. Please stop the program before continuing!
- Using a list of allready taken wifi channels you can select an non occupied wifi channel...if possible choose one that is far from an existing/used one hence the 2.4ghz wifi channel is divided into 11 channels; each overlapping eachother. Only channel 1,6 and 11 are not overlapping! It would be best to chose between one of these 3
[edit] Step 4 - define a custom Public & Private Wifi SSID
[edit] Step 5 - Register your fonera
[edit] Step 6 - Check your status on maps.fon.com
[edit] Step 7 - Define friends & Family
[edit] Step 8 - Define Public Wifi Throttling
[edit] Step 9 - Define Public Place information
[edit] Step 10 - Define Personalisation of your fonera
[edit] Cable Providers
[edit] Installing on a Telenet Cable modem
- The "motorola" cablemodem has a USB and an ethernet connection
- You can only use 1 connection at a time, it is impossible to use both connections together.
- The light subscriptions only allow *1* pc to be connected directly. If you want to connect a pc by cable it is best to order a FONERA+ and place the PC behind it. Or to put a Broadband router between the Fonera Classic and Cable modem
- The medium subscriptions allow *2* pc's to be connected. The Fonera is considered as a PC for Telenet. It will get a public ip adres from the Cable Modem. You need to place a HUB/Switch between the Cable modem and Fonera.
- People who have bought or hired the Digital TV "DigiBox" or "DigiCorder" will have received a 4 port switch/hub, they can connect their fonera to it together with 1 fixed pc and their digibox. 1 port is free for another Digibox if the owner wants to have digital television on a secondary TV screen.
[edit] Installing on a UPC cable modem
- There is a MAC registration issue with UPC Cable modems.
- Under the fonera you will find a mac adres. Go to the network settings of your pc/laptop and choose properties of your network card. The networkcards of the last 5 years allow you to change it's Adress... Please enter the macadres without - or : inbetween.
Then connect your pc/laptop to the upc modem and register. Afterwards you can just connect the fonera or fonera+ directly to your UPC modem.
- Again : If you want to still use your fixed pc then use a Fonera+ or buy a usb wifi connector (they are fairly cheap) and connect to the MyPlace.
- Freewlan addons allow the "cloning" of your mac adres as well; if you can not change the mac adres of your PC to do the necessary registration you can alter this here. To do this please branch the fonera directly to your pc and surf to 169.254.255.1 as soon as it reports "limited network". You can then choose under "advanced menu settings" the option "Cloning Mac".
[edit] @Home provider
- The @home provider requires you to change the HOSTNAME to start with CCxxxxx whereas xxxx is your subscriber number;
- The default Fonera firmware does not offer the service to alter it's default "OpenWrt" hostname. You could install "Freewlan" or "francofon" addons to enable this feature. Or you could put a broadband router between the fonera/internet modem to have this feature on any broadband router firmware out there
[edit] Adsl Providers
[edit] Installing on an Experiabox
- Experiabox : used by KPN Holland
[edit] Installing on a Livebox
- Livebox: Used by the Orange/Wanadoo/Tmobile group
- Belgium : Mobistar Adsl
- There is a TIME OUT rule on the Livebox. Please power down your live box twice...
[edit] Installing on a Belgacom Philips Adsl Modem
- These devices have 4 lan ports; beware that port 3 and 4 are only allowed for the Digital Television decoders. please use only ports 1 & 2 for the Fonera/fonera+
[edit] How to change my Fonera
- How can I change the speed offered to "visitors" so they can't steal all my internet?
- How can I change to Bill or Linus?
- How do I download the location of other FONspots so I can find them using my GPS when on the road?
